About Chris Brown, Director of The Parent Compass
Chris Brown is a certified school psychologist and a licensed professional counselor. He has worked in public schools in Connecticut since 1993 with students in grades pre-K through 12. Most recently he has been a school district administrator supervising school psychologists, social workers, and counselors. He has had a private counseling practice where he provided treatment to children, teens and their families. His university teaching has included an appointment as a part-time faculty member in the Counseling and School Psychology program in the Graduate School of Education at Southern Connecticut State University since 1996. He was also a part-time faculty member at Fairfield University in the Graduate School of Education and Allied Professions for eight years from 1996 to 2004. He currently volunteers in his community by serving on the Board of Managers for the Cheshire Community YMCA and he is a youth soccer coach. He also had a two year appointment on the Youth Services Commission for the Town of Cheshire.
Mr. Brown has presented information about the social and emotional development of youth for the National Association of School Psychologists at their annual conventions in 2007 and 2008. He has presented to state wide groups in Connecticut at the SADD Annual Conference in 2010 for The Governor's Prevention Partnership, and at the Annual Conference of the Connecticut Association of Youth Services in 2009. He has made numerous local presentations to parent groups, school groups, and youth services agencies.
He is currently leading his school district's participation in two cutting edge projects to address the social, emotional, and behavioral development of students. One project is focused on improving parenting skills to support positive childhood development through a partnership with professors from Southern Connecticut State University and a psychiatry fellow from the Yale School of Medicine. The other project is working to improve the emotional literacy of all staff and students in the district through a partnership led by Dr. Marc Brackett, the director of the Yale University Health, Emotion and Behavior Laboratory (more information at http://www.therulerapproach.org)
